Description:

SUU Outdoors at Southern Utah University is here to inspire the SUU community to engage, explore, and experience the world-renowned landscapes around campus through adventure, leadership, and development. Trips Program Staff are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Trips & Adventures Program which includes leading weekend and some weekday trips. Trips Program Staff must be outgoing, friendly, and enthusiastic about the outdoors. They must have good written and verbal communication skills, possess patience, and provide excellent customer service. Staff start as assistants in all technical skills and develop to leaders in multiple skill areas. Technical Skill areas available are: Hiking, Backpacking, Rock Climbing, Canyoneering, Mountain Biking, Whitewater, Flatwater (SUP, Kayak), XC Skiing, Backcountry Touring, and Snowshoeing.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and assist in the planning, development, and execution of trips/clinics.
  • Conduct pre-trip meetings with participants.
  • Assist in promoting and advertising SUU Outdoors events.
  • Maintain, clean, organize, and repair outdoor rental equipment.
  • Assist and perform pre- and post- trip logistics and administrative tasks.
  • Scout, inspect, and prepare trip locations and necessary equipment.
  • Assist in developing an outdoor resource library.
  • Respond to and follow all risk management/emergency procedures.
  • Submit Incident/Accident/Near Miss forms with appropriate documentation in timely manner.
  • Adhere to SUU Outdoors policies and procedures during all trips/clinics.
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Complete and submit End-of-the-Semester reports in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Minimum of leading two trips per semester.
  • Scheduled in-services and meetings.
  • Scheduled classes, programs, and events.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a current Southern Utah University student in good academic standing.
  • Participate in BOLT (Basic Outdoor Leadership Training) training. Any exceptions to this must be approved by the Trips Coordinator.
  • Previous outdoor leadership experience.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (Wilderness preferred) or willing to obtain upon hire.
  • Dependable and trustworthy.
  • Excellent people and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with all ages and groups.
  • Ability to work autonomously and in teams.
